What are Foam Board Signs?
Foam Board is a popular rigid sign substrate, commonly used for indoor sign applications and product displays. This well known sign board is cost effective and lightweight.
Foam Board Signs are referred to by many different names throughout the signage industry, including: Sign Board, Foamcore, Gator board, Gatorfoam, Ultra Board, Foamex, Forex, Extruded Foam, EPS and more. Foam Board Signs are made from a lightweight polystyrene foam core pressed between two smooth rigid faces, which is why many also call this rigid substrate “Foamcore” for its soft foam centre.
Traditional Foamcore that comes with rigid paper faces is most commonly used in the signage industry. Through the years, new production methods have allowed Foamcore to expand its capabilities with additional variations. These product lines share the same foam core but have have other exterior finishes. The exterior laminate can be made of different veneers, melamine, metal and polystyrene plastics. One of the most well know evolutions is referred to as Gator board or Gatorfoam.
Features of Foam Board Signs
The smooth surface of Foam Board makes it easy to work with and print on. Sizing is easy, foam board can be cut to size using a utility knife, cnc table and various saws. Foam Board Signs are excellent for making graphic displays and signs. Rigid Foam Board Signs are portable, easy to ship and used in a variety of marketing applications for trade shows, brand messages and interior décor.
Due to its lightweight foam core and paper exterior, Foam Board Signs cannot withstand heavy pressure, bends and creases. Foam Board Signs are not waterproof or weather resistant and are recommended for indoor sign applications. For additional durability where the aesthetic of foam core is desired we recommend the use of Gatorfoam or Gator Board
Gator Board Signs and Foam Board Signs
Gatorfoam and Gator Board is a specially developed foam core substrate used in the sign industry. The difference with gatorfoam and gator board is that it has a dense polystyrene foam core with a wood-fiber veneer finish for added strength. It’s considered to be one of the strongest types of foam boards available.
With the upgraded wood-fiber veneer exterior, Gator Board is more durable. Gator board can be used for more long term applications.
